Renault and the surrounding area within Monroe County are named after Philip Francois Renault, one of the most infamous men from the early French settlements in Illinois. In 1719 Renault left France and arrived in Illinois to develop mines. Upon his arrival, Renault founded the now defunct St. Philippe, the first organized community in Illinois. The exact area now known as Renault was originally called Glasgow City, so named by James Glasgow who laid out Renault in the year 1860. Eventually, the people of Glasgow City formally adopted the name which the local Post Office used when describing the Glasgow City delivery area, Renault.
